Unwind is a Japanese head spa on the second floor of 317 King Street West, in the middle of Toronto’s Theatre District. We do one thing properly: a full scalp and hair ritual in the Japanese tradition, in a quiet room, without rushing you.
If you have never had one, the short version is this — it is not a hair wash. It is 75 to 105 minutes of scalp analysis, deep cleansing, shiatsu massage, treatment and blow dry, and most people fall asleep somewhere in the middle.
What is a Japanese head spa?
A Japanese head spa treats the scalp as skin, because that is what it is. The Japanese approach borrows its logic from facials: analyse the surface first, clear what has built up on it, feed it something targeted, then finish. A salon wash cleans hair. A head spa treats the skin the hair grows out of.
The tradition comes out of Japanese hair salons, where scalp care has been a standalone service for decades rather than a two-minute step before a cut. The signature elements are a warm-water cleanse, a slow shiatsu massage that works the pressure points along the skull and neck, and a treatment mask matched to whatever the scalp actually needs — oil, dryness, flaking, sensitivity.
The reason it has spread beyond Japan is not really the hair. It is what an hour of sustained scalp pressure does to a nervous system that has been switched on all week.
The Unwind ritual, step by step
1. Scalp and hair consultation
Your therapist looks at your scalp before touching it — oil distribution, flaking, sensitivity, buildup at the hairline, how your hair sits at the root. This decides which cleanser and which mask you get. It takes a few minutes and it is the reason two guests booked into the same treatment leave with different products on their heads.
2. Head shiatsu massage
A deeply relaxing massage working the pressure points across the skull, temples and the base of the neck. This is done dry, before any water, so the pressure is direct. Most of the tension people carry in their jaw and forehead lets go here.
3. Deep scalp cleanse and double wash
A clarifying cleanse to lift product residue, hard-water minerals, sebum and dead skin, followed by a second wash. Toronto water is hard, and if you use dry shampoo, styling product or wear a toque five months a year, there is more sitting on your scalp than you think.
4. Treatment mask
A nourishing hair and scalp mask matched to your consultation — hydrating, clarifying, calming or strengthening — left to work while the massage continues into the shoulders and neck.
5. Neck, shoulder massage and blow dry
We finish with a shoulder and neck massage and a professional blow dry, so you walk back out onto King West looking like you meant to.
What a head spa actually helps with
- Scalp buildup and congestion — product residue and sebum that shampoo alone stops shifting
- Dryness and flaking — especially between November and March, when dry indoor heat does most of the damage
- Oiliness at the root — often a barrier problem rather than a washing-frequency problem
- Sensitivity and irritation — itching, tightness, reactive scalps
- Hair that feels thin or flat at the root — a clear, well-circulated scalp is the condition hair grows in, though no treatment regrows hair
- Tension headaches and jaw clenching — the massage does more for this than people expect
- Stress and poor sleep — the most common reason our guests rebook
We will be straight with you about the last two points: a head spa is a treatment, not medicine. If you have persistent hair loss, a diagnosed scalp condition, or anything painful, see a dermatologist first. We are happy to work alongside one.

Your first visit
Come with your hair however it is — do not wash it first, and do not skip washing it either. Product in your hair is useful information for your therapist, and we are going to wash it twice regardless.
Arrive five minutes early. You will get a warm botanical tea while your therapist runs the consultation. You stay fully clothed; only your head and neck are treated. Phones go away, and we do not talk through the treatment unless you want to.
You will leave with your hair dried and styled, and a short set of aftercare notes. Most people book the Signature Head Spa first and move to Deep Cleanse or Scalp Renewal once they know what their scalp responds to.

Japanese head spa, Korean head spa, or a salon wash?
These get used interchangeably online, so briefly:
A salon wash is a courtesy step before a cut — a few minutes, one shampoo, no analysis. A Korean head spa typically leans into scalp scaling and exfoliation with a stronger emphasis on treatment devices. A Japanese head spa, which is what we do, is built around the cleanse-massage-treat sequence and the shiatsu massage, with the emphasis on relaxation as much as on the scalp result.
None of them is objectively better. If your priority is a deep clean and a genuinely restorative hour, the Japanese approach is the one to book.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Japanese head spa take?
Between 75 and 105 minutes depending on the treatment. The Signature Head Spa is 75 minutes, Deep Cleanse is 90, and Scalp Renewal is 105. Add a facial and The Full Unwind runs 150 minutes.
How much is a head spa in Toronto?
Most Toronto studios charge between $100 and $225. At Unwind the Signature Head Spa is $120, Deep Cleanse is $175 and Scalp Renewal is $205.
Do I need to wash my hair before a head spa?
No. Come as you are. Your therapist wants to see your scalp in its normal state, and your hair is washed twice during the treatment.
How often should I get a head spa?
Every four to six weeks is the usual rhythm for maintenance. If you are treating buildup or a dry, irritated scalp, a shorter run of two or three visits closer together works better, then space them out.
Does a head spa help with hair growth?
It improves the condition of the scalp — circulation, cleanliness, a calm, comfortable scalp — which is the environment hair grows in. It does not regrow lost hair, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling. For genuine hair loss, see a dermatologist.
Is a head spa good for dandruff?
It helps with flaking caused by dryness and buildup, which is most of what people call dandruff. Medical seborrheic dermatitis needs a dermatologist, though many guests find treatments a useful complement.
Can I get a head spa with coloured or treated hair?
Yes. Tell your therapist at the consultation and we will adjust the cleanser and mask. Head spas are generally good for colour-treated hair because they clear buildup without stripping.
What should I wear?
Whatever you arrived in. You stay dressed — only your head, neck and shoulders are treated. Avoid a high collar if you can.
Will my hair be styled afterwards?
Yes, every treatment finishes with a professional blow dry.
Do you offer gift cards?
Yes. Get in touch and we will arrange one.

Dry Head Spa — the waterless option
Not every visit needs water. Our Dry Head Spa is the waterless side of the Japanese tradition — no shampoo, no water, no restyling. Instead, forty minutes of skilled scalp, temple, neck and shoulder massage to release the tension that builds from screens, deadlines and downtown life. Because your hair stays dry, there is nothing to rinse or blow-dry afterward, so you can walk straight back into your day.
Perfected in Japan as a remedy for tired, overthinking minds, a dry head spa works the pressure points and tight muscles around the head to ease everyday tension, improve circulation and quiet a busy nervous system. Most guests drift somewhere between awake and asleep within minutes. It is the perfect 40-minute reset on a lunch break or before an evening out — $85, 40 minutes, no shampoo, hair stays dry.
